Pembrokeshire Heritage & History

Pembrokeshire's History & Heritage
Pembrokeshire not only offers a spectacular coastline, beautiful scenery and an abundance of the renowed Pembrokeshire wildlife - it is also steeped in history. Pembrokeshire has more than its fair share of historical castles and heritage sites just waiting to be explored.

Cilgerran Castle
This is the most northerly of Pembrokeshire's castles. Its ramparts stand at the top of a large gorge overlooking the river Teifi.

Pentre Ifan Burial Chamber
Nr. Newport, in the Preseli Hills. A Stone Age burial chamber, set in the heart of Bluestone Country, where the ‘Spotted Dolerite’ came from which made the inner sanctum of Stonehenge. A fine example of a cromlech with a 15 ton capstone intact. Dramatic against sunrise or sunset.

Castell Henllys

This is a reconstructed prehistoric site of an Iron Age fort set in beautiful countryside. Visitors have the opportunity to see daily Iron Age life re-enacted.

Picton Castle and Woodland Gardens
A chance to see inside a unique habitable Pembrokeshire castle – a guided tour of Picton Castle takes you on a highly entertaining journey from the 13th century, through the Civil war, an elegant remodelling in the 1750s and on to the present day’.

St Davids Cathedral & Bishops Palace

The palace lies on the banks of the river Alun. This site was chosen during the 6th century as the site of a monastic foundation by St David , the patron Saint of Wales. The palace was mainly built between 1328-47 by Bishop Henry de Gower. St Davids was, in medieval times, the wealthiest diocese in Wales and this is reflected in the richness of its architecture, much of which is still evident today.

Y Felin Mill
St Dogmael's, Nr Cardigan. Y Felin is a 12th Century mill which is one of only two working water-driven mills in Wales and is the epicentre of Abbey Shakespeare post-rehearsal activity. Mike Hall, the miller, produces traditional stoneground flour which is available to buy at the Mill as well as freshly baked bread. Guided tours of the Mill can also be taken to have a look at the machinery inside.

St Dogmael's Abbey
St Dogmaels, Nr Cardigan. Remains of a 12th century abbey built by Benedictine monks on the site of an earlier Celtic monastery.
